The Existing Plant is located approximately 50 km to the north east of the city of Abu Dhabi. It is part of the Taweelah complex that also hosts the operating 744 MW and 12.5 MIGD Taweelah B plant .
The Existing Plant was completed in 1989 with a gross capacity of 255 MW of power and 29.2 MIGD of water. Its primary equipment includes three (3) GE Frame 9E gas turbines, three (3) HRSGs, three (3) auxiliary boilers, and four (4) MSF type desalination units.
The rehabilitation and upgrading work of the Existing Plant includes the upgrading of the three PG 9151E GTs, originally provided by GE, to type PG9171E and the fitting of dry low NOx combustors. The existing HRSG’s have been demolished and replaced with HRSGs identical to those being provided for the new works. The existing desalination plant has been upgraded and the capacity of each of the four existing MSF units increased to a capacity of 8 MIGD water production. The upgrading work includes review of auxiliary systems to ensure reliable operation under the rehabilitated conditions.
The Plant Extension covers the provision of a power station with five new GE 9171E GTs, each having a site rating of 107.3 MW at the guarantee conditions. Each GT will have an associated HRSG fitted with supplementary firing to increase the HRSG output as required. Steam from both the new and upgraded HRSGs will be passed to three new backpressure STs each producing 202.7
MW at guarantee conditions with residual low pressure steam being used in the desalination process. The new desalination plant will consist of fourteen units, of the MED type, each of 3.77 MIGD capacity giving an overall capacity of 52.78 MIGD of water.
