About Us Project Description

The Project has several components which can be described in the following phases:
  • The continued operation and maintenance of the Old Existing Plant and the New Existing Plant.
  • The engineering and construction of the UAN Plant Extension, which consists of five new gas turbines and HRSGs, two new steam turbines and two new MSF desalination units.
  • Integration of the New Existing Plant into the UAN Plant Extension.
  • Decommissioning of the Old Existing Plant.
  • Construction of Electrical Special Facilities and transfer to TRANSCO.

a
Construction of New Extension Plant (GTG Area)

The Existing Plant are comprised of power and desalination units that have been constructed over a period of years, some of which are reaching the end of their economic lives (“Old Existing Plant”) and some of which have been commissioned in the recent past (“New Existing Plant”). In order to extract the maximum value from these assets, APC operates the Old and New Existing Plant from the Closing Date of the UAN PWPA; 30 June 2003. The Old Existing Plant will be decommissioned between July and December 2008, after which it will be transferred back to ADWEA.

The Old Existing Plant comprise the following:

  • UAN East A (power and water).
  • UAN East B (Power and water).
  • UAN West Units 1-6 (power and water).
  • UAN West Units 7&8 (power and water).
  • UAN West Units 9&10 (power only).

UAN West Plant (Units D9&10)

The UAN Plant Extension is being constructed by Mitsui (Middle East) under a fixed price turnkey contract. The extension is comprised of five gas fired GE Frame 9351FA turbines each rated at 218MW gross at site reference conditions, with five dedicated Heat Recovery Steam Generators (“HRSG”), two back pressure steam turbines each rated at 308MW gross, and two MSF distiller units with a capacity of 12.68 MIGD gross. The gas turbines will have dual fuel firing capability, and the HRSGs will have supplemental firing.  Each turbine will have its own generator.

In addition to the above, the new UAN Plant Extension includes the Electrical Special Facilities,  which are a new indoor 400 kV grid station, a new indoor 132 kV grid station and connection to an existing indoor 132 kV grid station. Following completion, the Electrical Special Facilities will be transferred to Transco.

Construction of Electrical Special Facilities

The New Existing Assets are to be integrated into the UAN Plant Extension to produce the UAN Plant. This integration is to be performed as part of the EPC Contract and principally involves the routing of the steam output from the new steam turbines to the New Existing Assets by means of a shared steam header.

Water intake for the plant is through the existing intake system. Gas is to be supplied via the ADNOC network, and compressors have been included in the plant specification to compensate for any drop in the pipeline pressure. The supply of liquid back-up fuel will be by road tanker. Power is to be exported via 400kV overhead lines. The installation of these lines is the responsibility of Transco. Water is to be exported via the existing pipeline network.
